BFCM Prep With AI: Shopify Discounts and Inventory in One Afternoon

BFCM Prep With AI: Shopify Discounts and Inventory in One Afternoon

Black Friday is November 27 this year. If your prep list is still a note on your phone, an AI assistant connected to your store can get through most of it in an afternoon: pull last year's numbers, check stock on the products that matter, create the discount codes, and stage the sale collection.

It can't do all of it, though, and the gaps are exactly the kind you don't want to discover on Thanksgiving night. This is the plan I'd follow, with the limits marked where they bite. Everything about what the connectors can and can't do comes from Shopify's own documentation, linked at each step.

What you need before you start

Shopify now maintains official integrations for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, Muse, and Microsoft Copilot. They aren't in the Shopify App Store. You install each one from inside the AI tool, then get sent to your Shopify admin to approve access. The two I'd reach for are:

There's no extra Shopify fee. You pay for your Claude or ChatGPT subscription as usual. Do the setup on a desktop browser.

Two things to know about access before you click approve:

  1. It's read-only unless you say otherwise. The first half of this plan only needs read access. You approve write access when you get to the steps that change something.
  2. You can't dial access back down. Shopify's access guide says that to reduce an approved level, you uninstall the integration and reinstall it. So start low.

Shopify also says plainly not to create an API access token or build your own integration for this. Use the official one.

If you'd rather stay inside your admin, Sidekick covers a lot of the same ground with no setup. I'll flag where it's the better tool. New to it? Start with how to use Shopify Sidekick.

Step 1: Pull last year's numbers (read-only)

You can't plan this year's sale without knowing what sold last year. The connector runs analytics queries against your store data and returns tables and charts.

Ask one question at a time. Shopify's docs warn that layered comparisons can fail or come back hard to read, so resist the urge to write one giant prompt.

  • "Using Shopify, show my top 20 products by net sales from November 27 to December 1 last year."
  • "What was my average order value over that same period?"
  • "Which discount codes were used most in that period, and how much revenue came through each?"

Notice each prompt names Shopify. The docs recommend it so the assistant knows to use the connector instead of guessing.

Write down the top 20. That list drives every step after this.

Step 2: Check stock on the products that will carry the weekend

Now ask about inventory for those top sellers. The connector returns stock for every variant across your locations.

  • "For each of these products, show current inventory by variant and location: [paste your top 20]."
  • "Which of these variants have fewer than 15 units available?"

This is the step that pays for the afternoon. A bestseller with two sizes nearly out is a problem you can still fix in October. In late November it's a sold-out badge on your best traffic day.

If a count is wrong, the connector can correct it once you've approved write access. It sets the quantity at one location and records a reason (received, correction, damaged). It reads the current quantity first and stops if the number changed in the meantime, which is a sensible guard when orders are coming in.

More on reading and trusting these numbers in checking Shopify inventory with AI.

Better in Sidekick: a standing alert. Ask Sidekick to build a Shopify Flow that notifies you when any of these products drops below a threshold. A chat assistant only checks stock when you ask. A Flow watches all weekend.

Step 3: Review the discounts you already have

Do this one by hand, in Discounts in your admin. Shopify's documented action list for the connectors has no dedicated action for listing existing discount codes, and they can't change a code that already exists.

You're looking for three things: last year's BFCM codes that never expired, codes that will combine with this year's offer in ways you didn't intend, and anything still active that an affiliate or a coupon site has a copy of. Deactivate what shouldn't survive into the sale.

Step 4: Create this year's codes (write access)

This is where you approve write access. The connectors create percentage-off codes, for the whole store, for specific products, or for a collection. You can add a minimum purchase, a start date, and rules for who can use the code.

  • "Using Shopify, create a 25% off discount code BFCM25 for the whole store, starting November 27 at 12:00am Eastern, with a 50 dollar minimum purchase."
  • "Create a 30% off code VIP30 for the Best Sellers collection, starting November 25."

The assistant asks you to confirm the start date and who can use the code before it creates anything. Read that confirmation properly, because you can't edit the code through the connector afterward.

The full walkthrough, including what to put in the prompt, is in creating Shopify discount codes with AI. Three limits matter for BFCM specifically:

  • Percentage-off only. Fixed-amount codes, buy X get Y, free shipping, and automatic discounts all get built in your admin.
  • No editing. If the code comes out wrong, fix or delete it in the admin.
  • Check the end date yourself. The documented options cover a start date. Open each new code in the admin and confirm it ends when your sale ends. A Black Friday code that runs into January is a classic.

Step 5: Stage the catalog

With write access, the connector can create a collection, add products to it, and flip product status in bulk.

  • "Create a manual collection called Black Friday Sale and add these products: [list]."
  • "Set these 12 holiday bundle products from draft to active."

Two cautions. First, a collection the connector creates is published to your online store straight away, so don't put anything in it that gives the sale away early, or build it the week of. Second, bulk status changes are capped at 50 products per request, and changes run one item at a time. Shopify's docs note that a large batch can stop partway. After any bulk change, ask "which of those products are still draft?" and compare.

For banners and a sale landing page, the connector can't touch your live theme at all. It only edits unpublished themes. The safe workflow is the one you'd want anyway: duplicate your theme in the admin, have the assistant edit the copy, preview it, and publish it yourself when the sale starts.

Step 6: Verify in the admin

Ten minutes, no AI involved. Before you call it done:

  • Open every new discount code. Check the value, the start, the end, the minimum, and the combination settings.
  • Place a test order with each code.
  • Spot-check five products from the bulk status change.
  • Confirm stock numbers on your top five against what you physically have.
  • Preview the duplicated theme on a phone.

AI got you here quickly. This is the part that makes it safe to trust.

What AI can't do for you that weekend

Know these now so you aren't finding out at 11pm on Black Friday. Even with write access approved, Shopify blocks connected AI tools from issuing refunds, cancelling or capturing orders, marking orders as paid, processing returns, and creating or adjusting gift cards. Orders and customer records can be read but not edited. Settings like payments, taxes, and domains stay in the admin.

What it's good for during the sale is reading. "List my most recent 50 orders and flag any with more than five units of a single item." "Show current stock on my top 20." It's a fast way to ask questions while your hands are busy with everything else. The connector lists up to 50 orders at a time, so on a heavy day ask in smaller windows.

One more thing an afternoon can fix

Your assistant isn't the only AI reading your catalog in late November. Shoppers will be asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity for the best deal on whatever you sell, and those tools answer from your product data: price, availability, variants, shipping, returns. If that data is thin or stale, the answer is wrong or you're left out of it. We've covered the usual causes in why AI shows the wrong price or availability and why catalog freshness matters for AI shopping.

The same clean data helps both sides. It's what lets your own assistant answer a stock question correctly, and it's what a shopper's assistant reads before it recommends you. The free AI readiness checker shows what those assistants can see on your store in about a minute, and AgentReady publishes and maintains that structured data for you.

The afternoon, in order

  1. Connect Claude or ChatGPT with read-only access.
  2. Pull last year's top sellers, one question at a time.
  3. Check stock on them, and set up a low-stock Flow in Sidekick.
  4. Clean up old discount codes in the admin.
  5. Approve write access and create this year's percentage-off codes.
  6. Stage the sale collection, product statuses, and a duplicated theme.
  7. Verify everything by hand, then place a test order.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Can AI create my Black Friday discount codes in Shopify?
Yes, with limits. Shopify's official connectors for Claude and ChatGPT create percentage-off discount codes for the whole store, specific products, or a collection, with an optional minimum purchase, start date, and eligibility rules. They don't create fixed-amount discounts and they can't change a code that already exists. Anything else, such as buy X get Y, free shipping, or automatic discounts, you set up in your Shopify admin.
Can ChatGPT or Claude check my Shopify inventory?
Yes. Once you connect your store through Shopify's official integration, the assistant can return stock for every variant of a product across your locations. With write access approved, it can also set the quantity at one location and record a reason such as received, correction, or damaged.
Is it safe to connect an AI assistant to my Shopify store before BFCM?
Access is read-only unless you approve write access, and the assistant can never do more than the staff account that connected it. Refunds, order cancellations, payment captures, and gift card changes are blocked even with write access. The data you share does leave Shopify and falls under the AI provider's terms, so approve only the access you need.
What can't AI do for BFCM prep on Shopify?
Through the official connectors it can't create fixed-amount discounts, edit existing discount codes, edit orders or customer records, issue refunds, change your live theme, or change settings like payments, taxes, and shipping. Large batches run one item at a time and can stop partway, so anything over a few dozen items needs a check in your admin afterward.
Should I use Sidekick or Claude and ChatGPT for BFCM prep?
Use Sidekick for work that lives inside the admin, like building a Shopify Flow low-stock alert or staging a discount for approval. Use a connected Claude or ChatGPT when you want to work through a longer plan in one conversation, pull analytics alongside your own notes, or draft copy next to store data. Most merchants will end up using both.
