Yes, you can connect ChatGPT to your Shopify store, and you no longer need a third-party app or an API token to do it. Shopify maintains an official plugin. Install it from ChatGPT, approve access in your admin, and you can ask about orders, stock, and sales, or have ChatGPT create products and discount codes for you.
First, a distinction that trips people up.
Two different things called "ChatGPT and Shopify"
Managing your store from ChatGPT. That's this guide. You, the merchant, connect your own ChatGPT account to your own store and use it as an assistant.
Selling in ChatGPT. That's shoppers finding and buying your products inside their conversations. It runs through Shopify's catalog and agentic sales channels, has nothing to do with the plugin, and we cover it in buying in ChatGPT for Shopify merchants.
If you searched for one and landed on the other, that's why the setup instructions never seemed to match.
Set it up
Per Shopify's plugin documentation:
- Open the Shopify plugin install page in ChatGPT, linked from the help article. It isn't in the Shopify App Store.
- Install the plugin.
- You're redirected to your Shopify admin. Sign in and read what access is being requested.
- Approve it, then start a fresh ChatGPT conversation.
Use a desktop browser for setup. Shopify charges nothing extra for the plugin. You pay OpenAI for ChatGPT and Shopify for your plan, same as before.
Skip any tutorial that has you create an Admin API access token. Shopify's guidance is to use the official integration and not build your own connection.
Pick your access level carefully
Access is read-only unless you approve write access.
- Read-only covers every "show me" and "how many" question. Nothing in the store can change.
- Write access is needed for creating or updating anything.
Start with read-only. According to Shopify's access guide, an approved level can't be reduced. You'd have to uninstall and reinstall. Raising it later takes one approval.
The plugin also can't exceed the permissions of the staff account you connect with. If that account can't edit products, neither can ChatGPT. For a team, that's a useful control: connect with an account scoped to the work.
What you can do with it
Ask about the store (read-only):
- "@Shopify show my 20 most recent orders and their fulfillment status."
- "@Shopify what were my top 10 products by sales last month?"
- "@Shopify how much stock do I have of [product], by variant and location?"
- "@Shopify find customers with more than five orders."
Change the store (write access):
- Create and update products, including variants, options, prices, SKUs, and photos
- Set product status in batches of up to 50
- Create manual or smart collections and add products to them
- Set an inventory quantity at a location, with a reason
- Create percentage-off discount codes for the whole store, specific products, or a collection
For pages, menus, metafields, and other data without a dedicated action, the plugin can work through the Admin API and asks you to confirm before it changes anything. Shopify notes that results vary more in this area, so check that work in your admin.
Two habits make a real difference. Name Shopify in each request so ChatGPT uses the plugin. And ask for one thing at a time, especially with analytics. Short, specific questions return clean answers. A prompt that stacks three comparisons often doesn't.
What it won't do
Shopify blocks these regardless of access level:
- Refunds, order cancellations, payment captures, marking orders paid, returns
- Creating or adjusting gift cards
- Editing existing orders or customer records
- Editing, publishing, or deleting your live theme
- Changing your plan, payments, taxes, or domains
- Fixed-amount discounts, or changes to existing discount codes
For theme work, the supported route is to duplicate your theme in the admin, let ChatGPT edit the unpublished copy, and publish it yourself after a preview.
Snags and fixes
ChatGPT gives general advice instead of using your store. Name the plugin in the request. If it still won't use it, Shopify's docs put the problem on ChatGPT's side and point you to OpenAI's Help Center.
It keeps asking to authorize a store you've left. Start a new conversation. Older chats can keep the earlier store's connection.
An image won't attach to a product. Image links have to be public web addresses. A file on your computer only works if you attach it to the chat.
A bulk change stopped halfway. Changes run one item at a time, and big batches can stall. Ask which items are still unchanged, then finish in the admin.
Your data and your responsibility
Once you approve access, the data you share with ChatGPT is handled under OpenAI's terms and privacy policy. Shopify's considerations page says it no longer controls how that data is used or retained, and that you remain responsible for your customer obligations and for any change the tool makes. Shopify doesn't review actions an AI tool takes on your behalf.
So read OpenAI's terms before you connect a store with customer records, and look over changes in your admin.
The risks and a setup checklist are in is it safe to connect AI to your Shopify store?
To remove access, uninstall the plugin from your Shopify admin.
Where to go from here
Try a read-only afternoon first, then pick one write task. The two that pay off fastest are checking inventory with AI and creating discount codes with AI. If you use Claude instead, the Claude setup guide covers the same ground.
And since ChatGPT is also where your shoppers are asking for product recommendations, it's worth seeing your store the way they do. The free AI readiness checker reports what AI assistants can read from your storefront in about a minute.
