Creating a Shopify discount code by hand is a dozen fields and a few chances to get one wrong. With an AI assistant connected to your store, it's one sentence:
Using Shopify, create a 15% off discount code SPRING15 for the Spring collection, starting March 1, with a 40 dollar minimum purchase.
That works today in Claude and ChatGPT through Shopify's official integrations, and in Sidekick inside your admin. It works within limits, though, and a discount code is not the place to learn the limits by accident. Here's what AI can set, what it can't, and what to check before a code reaches customers.
What AI can create
Per Shopify's documentation for the Claude connector and the ChatGPT plugin, both create one kind of discount: a percentage-off code. You can aim it at:
- your whole store
- specific products
- a collection
And you can add:
- a minimum purchase requirement
- a start date
- rules for who can use it
That covers the everyday cases well: a welcome code, a collection sale, a win-back offer, a code for one influencer.
What AI can't create or change
| You want | Through Claude or ChatGPT | Where to do it |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage off, by code | Yes | Chat or admin |
| Fixed amount off | No | Admin |
| Buy X get Y | Not documented | Admin |
| Free shipping | Not documented | Admin |
| Automatic discount, no code | Not documented | Admin |
| Edit an existing code | No | Admin |
The last row is the one to remember. The integrations can't change a code once it exists. If the percentage or the date comes out wrong, you fix it on the Discounts page in your admin.
Before you start
You need the connector installed with write access approved. Creating a discount changes your store, so read-only won't do it. If you haven't connected yet, the setup guides are here: Claude and ChatGPT.
The assistant also can't exceed the permissions of the staff account that connected it. If that account can't create discounts in the admin, the prompt will fail.
Write the prompt
A good discount prompt names six things. Leave one out and the assistant has to guess or ask.
- Shopify, by name, so the assistant uses the connector
- The percentage
- The code itself, spelled exactly
- What it applies to: whole store, named products, or a named collection
- The start date, with a time zone if timing matters
- Any minimum purchase or eligibility rule
Some examples:
- "Using Shopify, create a 10% off code WELCOME10 for the whole store, starting today."
- "Using Shopify, create a 20% off code LINEN20 that applies only to the Linen collection, starting June 1, minimum purchase 75 dollars."
- "Using Shopify, create a 25% off code that applies to these three products: [names]. Call it BUNDLE25 and start it Friday at 9am Pacific."
Use exact collection and product names. "The summer stuff" might match two collections, and the assistant will pick one.
Read the confirmation
Before anything is created, the assistant asks you to confirm the start date and who can use the code. This is your one chance to catch a mistake inside the chat, so read it instead of typing "yes" on reflex. Check the code spelling, the percentage, the target, and the date.
A habit worth building: ask the assistant to restate the full discount in plain words first. "Before you create it, tell me exactly what this code will do." It costs ten seconds.
Check it in the admin
Shopify's documented options for these integrations cover the value, the target, the minimum, the start date, and eligibility. They don't mention end dates, usage limits, or combination settings. So after the code exists, open Discounts in your admin and look at:
- End date. Does the code stop when your promotion stops? A sale code that never expires is one of the most common discount mistakes on any store, AI or not.
- Usage limits. Is there a total cap, or a one-per-customer limit, if you wanted one?
- Combinations. Can it stack with other product, order, or shipping discounts? Should it?
- Status. Is it active or scheduled as you expected?
Then place a test order. Add an eligible product, apply the code, and confirm the discount is what you intended. Try it on a product that shouldn't qualify, too.
Shopify is direct about this in its considerations for AI tools: AI output can contain errors, Shopify doesn't review actions a tool takes for you, and an incorrect change is your responsibility. A discount is money, so it's worth the two minutes.
If a code does come out wrong, the fixes are in why AI created the wrong discount.
Using Sidekick instead
If you're already in the admin, Sidekick can do this without any setup. Ask for "a 15% discount code for email subscribers, valid for two weeks," and it prepares the discount for you to review and approve before it's saved. The same checks apply once it's created.
Sidekick is the better fit when the discount is part of admin work you're doing anyway. A connected Claude or ChatGPT is the better fit when the code is one piece of a bigger job, like planning a campaign where you're also drafting the email and pulling the numbers from last time.
When you're making a lot of them
For a batch of codes, say one per influencer, give the assistant the list and let it work through them one at a time. Two cautions:
- Changes run one item at a time, and Shopify's docs warn that large batches can stop partway. Afterward, count the codes on the Discounts page against your list.
- Every code needs the same admin check. For twenty codes, spot-check five and verify the end date on all of them.
For big seasonal pushes, the BFCM prep plan puts discount setup in order with stock checks and catalog staging.
The short version
- Connect Claude or ChatGPT with write access, or open Sidekick.
- Ask for a percentage-off code and name the code, the target, the start date, and any minimum.
- Read the confirmation before you approve.
- Open the code in your admin. Check the end date, limits, and combinations.
- Place a test order.

One related thing worth a minute. When a sale changes your prices, the AI assistants your shoppers use should see the new price too. The free AI readiness checker shows what pricing and availability data they can read from your store right now.
