Why Did AI Create the Wrong Discount in My Shopify Store?

Why Did AI Create the Wrong Discount in My Shopify Store?

You asked your AI assistant for a discount code and something's off. It's 50% when you wanted 15%. It applies to the whole store, not one collection. It has no end date. Or customers are telling you it doesn't work at all.

Deal with the live code first, then work out why. This post goes in that order.

First: stop the damage

If a wrong code is live and customers have it, don't start by diagnosing.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts.
  2. Open the code.
  3. Click Deactivate, and confirm.

Deactivating is immediate and reversible. Per Shopify's guide to managing discounts, you can reactivate it later, and editing a discount doesn't change orders where it was already used.

Then decide: edit it and switch it back on, or delete it and make a new one.

You can't fix it from the chat. Shopify's official Claude and ChatGPT integrations can't change a discount code that already exists. Asking the assistant to "change it to 15%" may produce a second code, which makes things worse. Fix it in the admin.

If orders already went through at the wrong discount, that's a customer service decision, not a technical one. Most merchants honour them.

Now: why it happened

Seven causes cover nearly every case.

1. You asked for something it can't make

Shopify's documentation is specific: the integrations create percentage-off codes and don't create fixed-amount discounts. Buy X get Y, free shipping, and automatic discounts aren't in the documented list either.

So "create a 10 dollar off code" is a request the tool can't fulfil as asked. An assistant should tell you so. But it may give you the nearest thing it can make instead, and ten dollars becomes ten percent.

Sign: you asked for an amount, shipping, or a bundle deal and got a percentage.

Fix: create those types in the admin.

2. The prompt left a gap

"Make a discount for the summer sale" leaves out the percentage, the code, the target, and the dates. Every blank is a decision the assistant makes for you.

Sign: the code is reasonable, just not what you had in mind.

Fix: name all six things: Shopify, the percentage, the code, what it applies to, the start date, and any minimum or eligibility rule. The pattern is in creating discount codes with AI.

3. It matched the wrong collection or product

"The summer collection" might match "Summer 2026," "Summer Sale," and "Summer Essentials." The assistant chose one. Or it may not have found a match and applied the code more widely than you meant.

Sign: the discount works on products it shouldn't, or on everything.

Fix: use the exact collection name as it appears in your admin. Ask first: "Which collections have 'summer' in the name?"

4. Nobody set an end date

The options Shopify documents for these integrations include a start date. They don't mention an end date. A code created in chat may well run until someone stops it.

Sign: last month's promotion is still being redeemed.

Fix: open every AI-created code in the admin and set the end date yourself. Do it straight after creating the code, every time.

5. The start date or time zone is off

"Starting Friday" depends on which Friday and whose midnight. A code can go live a day early, or sit inactive when your email lands.

Sign: "the code doesn't work" on launch morning, or early redemptions before the announcement.

Fix: give a full date and a time zone. Then check the scheduled start in the admin before you announce anything.

6. It won't combine, or it combines too much

Shopify's combinations guide says discounts don't combine automatically. Each has combination settings, and several apply together only when each one allows it.

That cuts both ways:

  • Customers say the code doesn't work. They already have an automatic discount in the cart, and your new code isn't set to combine with it. Only one of them applies.
  • The code is worth more than you meant. It's set to combine, and it's stacking on top of a sale.

Combination settings aren't among the documented options when a code is created through the integrations, so check them yourself.

Fix: open the code, find the Combinations section, and choose deliberately.

7. Usage limits and eligibility weren't what you assumed

You wanted one use per customer. Or first-time buyers only. If the prompt didn't say so, or said it loosely, the code may be open to everyone, any number of times.

Sign: the same customer has used it five times, or a "new customer" code is being used by regulars.

Fix: set usage limits and customer eligibility in the admin. For a specific group, limit the code to a customer segment. See customer segments with AI.

Whose mistake is it?

Honestly, usually a shared one. The assistant filled a gap it should have asked about, and the confirmation was approved without a careful read.

Shopify is clear about where responsibility sits. Its considerations for AI tools page says actions AI tools take for you aren't reviewed or approved by Shopify, and that an incorrect change is yours to own. The integrations do ask you to confirm the start date and who can use the code before creating it. That prompt is the safety net. It only works if you read it.

How to stop it happening again

Before: ask for a plain-language summary.

Before you create it, tell me exactly what this discount will do: the code, the percentage, what it applies to, when it starts, and who can use it.

If the summary is wrong, the code would have been wrong. This catches causes 2, 3, and 5.

During: read the confirmation. Don't type "yes" by reflex.

After: run the five-point check in the admin.

  1. Value and type
  2. What it applies to
  3. Start and end date
  4. Usage limits and eligibility
  5. Combinations

Then: place a test order. Add an eligible product and apply the code. Try a product that shouldn't qualify. Try it with any automatic discount that's running.

Two minutes, and it catches all seven causes.

When to skip AI for a discount

Use the admin directly for:

  • Fixed-amount, buy X get Y, free shipping, and automatic discounts
  • Anything where the combination rules matter a lot
  • High-value codes during your biggest sales

Use AI for what it's good at: quick percentage codes for a collection or an audience, and batches of simple codes, each checked afterward.

The short version

  • Live and wrong? Deactivate it in the admin first.
  • Can't edit from chat. Fix it in Discounts.
  • Most causes are gaps in the prompt or a discount type the integration can't make.
  • Always set the end date and check combinations yourself.
  • Test order before you announce.

It's worth reviewing your whole discount list now and then, not just the newest code. See how to audit your active Shopify discounts.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Why did ChatGPT or Claude create the wrong discount in Shopify?
Usually because the request left something out and the assistant filled the gap, or asked for something the integration can't create. Shopify's official integrations create percentage-off codes only, so a request for a fixed amount or a free shipping code can't be made as asked. Missing end dates and ambiguous collection names are the other common causes.
Can I ask the AI to fix a discount it created?
Not through Shopify's official Claude and ChatGPT integrations. They can't change a discount code that already exists. Open the discount in your Shopify admin to edit it, deactivate it, or delete it.
How do I quickly stop a wrong discount code?
In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts, open the code, and click Deactivate. That stops it being used straight away and can be reversed. Editing a discount doesn't affect orders where it was already used.
Why won't the discount code AI created combine with my other discounts?
Shopify discounts don't combine automatically. Each discount has its own combination settings, and several apply to one order only when every one of them allows it. Open the code in your admin and check the Combinations section.
Who is responsible if an AI tool creates an incorrect discount?
You are. Shopify's documentation says actions that AI tools take on your behalf aren't reviewed or approved by Shopify, and that if a tool makes an incorrect change, you're responsible for it. That's why reading the confirmation and checking the code in your admin matters.
