Sidekick vs Claude vs ChatGPT for Shopify: Which to Use for Which Job

Sidekick vs Claude vs ChatGPT for Shopify: Which to Use for Which Job

You have three assistants that can now work with your live Shopify data: Sidekick, which Shopify builds into the admin, and Claude and ChatGPT, which connect through official Shopify integrations. They overlap a lot. They also differ in ways that matter the moment you try to get real work done.

The quick verdict:

  • Sidekick for anything that starts and ends in the Shopify admin
  • Claude or ChatGPT for store work that's part of something bigger
  • Between Claude and ChatGPT, pick the one you already use. On the Shopify side they're close to identical.

The rest of this post is the reasoning, task by task.

(A note on scope. This is about using AI to run your store. ChatGPT as a place where shoppers find and buy your products is a separate subject, covered in Sidekick vs ChatGPT: which AI for which job.)

How they differ at the root

Sidekick lives inside Shopify. There's nothing to install. It's available on the admin pages where you work, and it can reach admin features directly.

Claude and ChatGPT live outside Shopify. You connect them through an official integration and approve what they can access. They get a defined set of actions on your store, and they bring everything else they can do: reading your files, long working sessions, writing, analysis across sources.

Almost every difference below comes from that.

Where Sidekick wins

No setup and no access decisions. Open the admin and ask. For a first try with AI, that's hard to beat.

It's next to the action. Ask which orders are unfulfilled, and you're one click from fulfilling them. With an outside assistant you'd switch windows.

Flow. Sidekick can draft a Flow workflow from a description. That turns a question you'd keep asking into something that runs without you.

Fewer things to manage. There's no connection to scope, no second company's data terms to read, nothing to uninstall later.

Good starting points: how to use Sidekick and prompts that save time.

Where Claude and ChatGPT win

Your other material. Planning a sale usually involves more than Shopify: a margin spreadsheet, last year's notes, a supplier's price list, an email draft. An outside assistant can hold all of it in one conversation with your store data. Sidekick only knows the store.

Long, multi-step work. "Pull last year's top sellers, check stock on each, suggest a discount plan, then draft the launch email" is one sitting in Claude or ChatGPT.

The assistant you already know. If your team works in ChatGPT or Claude all day, with habits and saved instructions, putting the store there removes a context switch.

Work outside the store. The same assistant that reads your orders can write the blog post, summarize the supplier contract, and prepare the meeting notes.

Setup takes a few minutes: Claude or ChatGPT.

Claude vs ChatGPT: is there a real difference?

On the Shopify side, not much. Shopify documents the same abilities and the same limits for both integrations: the same product, collection, inventory, order, customer, discount, and analytics actions, the same 50-item caps, the same blocked actions.

So choose on everything else:

  • Which one do you already pay for? Shopify adds no fee for either.
  • Which one does your team already use?
  • Which handles your other work better? That's the bigger share of what you'll do with it.

Small practical notes from Shopify's docs: in ChatGPT you can mention the plugin directly with @Shopify, and in Claude you confirm the connector is turned on for the conversation. In both, name Shopify in the request.

Shopify also offers integrations for Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, Muse, and Microsoft Copilot. If one of those is your daily assistant, check its page in Shopify's help center, because what each can do varies.

The safety difference

Both Sidekick and the connected assistants ask before they change anything. The difference is in the data.

With a connected Claude or ChatGPT, the store data you share is handled by that AI provider under its own terms and privacy policy. Shopify's documentation says it no longer controls how that data is used or retained once you grant access. That makes two choices yours: the access level (start with read-only) and the staff account you connect with (the assistant can't exceed its permissions).

With Sidekick there's no separate connection to configure. We cover what it can see in is Shopify Sidekick safe? and the connected side in is it safe to connect AI to your Shopify store?

How I'd split the work

Use Sidekick for:

  • Quick questions while you're in the admin
  • Changes you'll review on the spot
  • Building Flow automations
  • Anything a new team member needs to do without setup

Use Claude or ChatGPT for:

  • Planning sessions that mix store data with your own documents
  • Writing that draws on store data: emails, summaries, briefs
  • Research and analysis that goes beyond Shopify
  • Work you want to do without opening the admin

Use the admin for:

  • Refunds, cancellations, and order edits
  • Anything touching payments, taxes, or your live theme
  • Large bulk changes, by bulk editor or CSV

Something none of them will tell you

All three read your store from the inside, with full access. None of them sees your store the way a shopper's AI assistant does, from the outside, reading only what your storefront publishes. Ask any of them "do I show up when someone asks an AI for a product like mine?" and you'll get a guess.

That outside view is a separate check. The free AI readiness checker runs it in about a minute.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Is Sidekick or ChatGPT better for managing a Shopify store?
Sidekick is better for work that stays inside the Shopify admin: it needs no setup, sits next to the screens where you act, and can draft Shopify Flow automations. A connected ChatGPT or Claude is better when the store task is part of wider work, such as planning a campaign with your own documents alongside store data.
What's the difference between the Claude and ChatGPT integrations for Shopify?
On the Shopify side, very little. Shopify's documentation describes the same capabilities and the same limits for both: reading products, inventory, orders, customers, and analytics, and with write access, creating products, setting inventory, and creating percentage-off discount codes. The practical difference is which assistant you prefer and already pay for.
Can ChatGPT or Claude do everything Sidekick can?
No. Through the official integrations, a connected assistant can't edit existing discount codes, create fixed-amount discounts, edit orders or customers, or touch your live theme. Sidekick can also draft Shopify Flow workflows from inside Flow, which the outside integrations aren't documented to do.
Do I have to choose one AI assistant for my Shopify store?
No. They don't conflict. Many merchants use Sidekick for quick admin questions and automations, and a connected Claude or ChatGPT for longer planning sessions. The only cost of using both is the outside assistant's subscription.
Which is safer, Sidekick or a connected AI tool?
Sidekick involves fewer decisions, since there's no separate connection to install or scope. With a connected Claude or ChatGPT, the store data you share is handled by the AI provider under its own terms, so you need to choose an access level and a staff account deliberately. Both ask for your approval before making changes.
