25 Prompts for Claude and ChatGPT Once They're Connected to Shopify

25 Prompts for Claude and ChatGPT Once They're Connected to Shopify

Connecting Claude or ChatGPT to your Shopify store takes a few minutes. Knowing what to ask it takes longer. These 25 prompts are a starting set, grouped by job, each built around an action Shopify's official integrations are documented to support.

Three rules apply to all of them:

  • Name Shopify. It tells the assistant to use the integration instead of general knowledge.
  • Be exact. Real product names, real dates, real numbers.
  • One thing at a time, especially for sales questions.

Prompts marked (write) change your store and need write access approved. Everything else works read-only. Not connected yet? Start with the guides for Claude or ChatGPT.

Check the connection

1. "Using Shopify, which store are you connected to? Give me the name, domain, plan, currency, and time zone."

Run this first in any new conversation. It confirms the integration is on and pointed at the right store, which matters if you have more than one.

Products

2. "Using Shopify, find active products priced under 25 dollars."

3. "Using Shopify, find all products tagged 'clearance' and list their prices."

4. "Using Shopify, show me everything about [product name]: variants, prices, SKUs, and status."

5. "Using Shopify, list my draft products."

The product search works by keyword, or by a filter such as price, tag, or status. Build your prompts around those.

Inventory

6. "Using Shopify, show inventory for [product name] by variant and location."

7. "Using Shopify, check stock on these products and tell me which variants are under 10 units: [list]."

8. (write) "Using Shopify, set inventory for SKU [SKU] to 40 units at the [location name] location. Reason: received."

The lookup works product by product, so give it a list instead of asking for the whole catalog. More in checking Shopify inventory with AI.

Orders

9. "Using Shopify, list my 25 most recent orders with fulfillment status."

10. "Using Shopify, show me order [number]: items, fulfillment status, and tracking."

11. "From my 50 most recent orders, which are still unfulfilled?"

12. "From my recent orders, flag any with more than five units of a single item."

The listing covers up to 50 recent orders. For anything over a longer period, use a sales prompt instead. Orders are read-only, so there's no write prompt here. More in looking up orders with AI.

Sales

13. "Using Shopify, show my top 20 products by total sales in the last 30 days."

14. "Using Shopify, show total sales by day for the last 14 days."

15. "Using Shopify, show orders and average order value by week for the last 12 weeks."

16. "Using Shopify, show sales by sales channel for last month."

17. "Show me the query you ran for that."

Number 17 is the one to remember. It shows which metric, grouping, and dates produced the answer, so you can check it against your admin. More in asking AI about your Shopify sales.

Customers

18. "Using Shopify, list my customers and show each one's order count and total spend."

Customer records are read-only. Remember that customer details are personal data, and asking about them shares that data with the AI provider.

Catalog changes

19. (write) "Using Shopify, create a draft product called [name] with sizes S, M, and L, priced at 48 dollars, with inventory tracking on."

20. (write) "Using Shopify, update the description of [product name] to lead with the material and dimensions. Show me the new description before you save it."

21. (write) "Using Shopify, set these 12 products to draft: [list]."

22. (write) "Using Shopify, create a manual collection called [name] and add these products: [list]."

Two things to know. Status changes cover up to 50 products per request. And a collection created this way is published to your online store, so don't put anything in it you're not ready to show.

For bigger jobs, see bulk editing products with AI.

Discounts

23. (write) "Using Shopify, create a 15% off discount code [CODE] for the [collection name] collection, starting [date], with a [amount] dollar minimum purchase."

The integrations create percentage-off codes only, and can't edit a code afterward. Open every new code in your admin and check the end date and usage limits. More in creating discount codes with AI.

The two that keep you safe

24. "Before you make that change, tell me exactly what will change, in plain words."

Use it before approving any write. It costs ten seconds and catches the wrong collection, the wrong percentage, and the wrong date.

25. "Which of those items didn't update?"

Use it after any batch. Changes run one item at a time and a large batch can stop partway. This finds the stragglers.

How to chain them

The single prompts are useful. The sequences are where the time savings add up, because the assistant carries each answer into the next question.

A weekly check (read-only):

  1. Prompt 13, top sellers
  2. Prompt 7, stock on those sellers
  3. Prompt 11, anything unfulfilled
  4. "Write me a five-line summary of all that."

A sale setup (write):

  1. Prompt 13, to choose what goes on sale
  2. Prompt 7, to confirm you have the stock
  3. Prompt 22, to build the collection
  4. Prompt 23, to create the code
  5. Prompt 24 before each change, and a check in the admin after

The BFCM prep plan is a longer version of the second one.

What not to ask

Save yourself the back and forth. Through the official integrations, these don't work:

  • Refunding, cancelling, or editing an order
  • Editing a customer record
  • Creating a fixed-amount discount, or changing an existing code
  • Changing your live theme, payments, taxes, or domains

Those belong in the admin. The full list is in every AI option compared.

Save the ones you reuse

Both Claude and ChatGPT let you keep standing instructions or saved prompts. Once a prompt earns its place, store it with your real collection names and thresholds filled in, so the weekly check is one paste.

If you'd rather work inside the admin, most of the read prompts here work in Sidekick as well, and it has a saved-prompt feature of its own, covered in Sidekick prompts that save time.

One question isn't on this list because none of these assistants can answer it from inside your store: whether your products show up when a shopper asks an AI for something like them. The free AI readiness checker answers that from the outside, in about a minute.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What can I ask ChatGPT or Claude about my Shopify store?
Once connected through Shopify's official integration, you can ask about products, collections, inventory by location, recent orders, customers, and sales analytics. With write access approved, you can also ask it to create or update products, build collections, set inventory quantities, and create percentage-off discount codes.
How should I phrase a prompt for a Shopify-connected AI assistant?
Name Shopify so the assistant uses the integration, then be specific about the thing, the scope, and the time period. For analytics, name the metric, the grouping, the period, and the sort, and ask one question at a time.
Which prompts need write access?
Anything that changes the store: creating or updating products, changing product status, creating collections, setting inventory, and creating discount codes. Questions about products, stock, orders, customers, and sales only need read access.
Do these prompts work in Shopify Sidekick too?
Most of the read prompts do, without the 'Using Shopify' prefix, since Sidekick is already inside your store. Sidekick stages changes for your approval and has its own abilities, such as drafting Shopify Flow workflows.
What's the most useful follow-up prompt?
For analytics, 'show me the query you ran,' which reveals the metric and dates behind a number. For changes, 'before you do it, tell me exactly what will change,' which gives you a plain-language summary to check before approving.
