Short answer: most of the AI you can use to run a Shopify store is already included in what you pay Shopify. Sidekick and Shopify Magic cost nothing extra. Connecting Claude or ChatGPT carries no Shopify fee either, though you'll pay for the assistant itself.
The money isn't where the real cost is, though. This post covers both: what each option costs in dollars, and what it costs in the things nobody puts on a pricing page.
The price list
| Option | Extra cost from Shopify | What you pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Sidekick | None | Included with your Shopify plan. Features and limits vary by plan. |
| Shopify Magic | None | Included on every plan. Some features vary. |
| Shopify Flow, drafted by Sidekick | None | Listed for Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Plus |
| Connected Claude | None | Your Claude subscription, paid to Anthropic |
| Connected ChatGPT | None | Your ChatGPT subscription, paid to OpenAI |
| Third-party AI apps | Varies | The app's own monthly fee or usage credits |
Sidekick: included
Shopify's Sidekick page says using it costs nothing extra and that it comes with your Shopify plan. The catch is in the next clause: features and usage limits vary by plan.
In practice that means two things. Heavy use may run into a limit sooner on a lower plan. And some newer capabilities arrive on higher plans first. If Sidekick tells you a feature isn't available, your plan is the first thing to check.
One naming trap. There's a third-party app in the Shopify App Store with "Sidekick" in its name. It's a paid customer-service chatbot from another company and has nothing to do with Shopify's assistant. If you see a monthly price next to the word Sidekick, you're looking at the wrong thing.
Getting started: how to use Shopify Sidekick.
Shopify Magic: included
Shopify's help center says Magic tools are available for free on any subscription plan, with the note that access to specific features might vary. Magic is the set of AI features built into admin screens: description drafting, image editing, suggested replies, and so on. More in what Shopify Magic includes.
Flow automations: included on most plans
Having Sidekick draft a Shopify Flow workflow is listed in Shopify's changelog as available on Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Plus. You install the Flow app and build as many workflows as you need. How to do it: building Flow automations with AI.
Connected Claude or ChatGPT: no Shopify fee
Shopify's documentation for the Claude connector and the ChatGPT plugin says the same thing for both: there's no extra Shopify fee, standard Shopify plan pricing applies, and you pay the AI provider for your subscription.
What the docs don't say is which subscription tier you need. That's set by Anthropic and OpenAI and it changes, so check their current plans before assuming your account qualifies. If several people on your team will use it, also check how many seats you need.
So the question is simple. If you already pay for Claude or ChatGPT, connecting your store adds nothing to the bill. If you don't, you're deciding whether store work justifies a new subscription, and for most merchants Sidekick covers the basics without one.
Third-party AI apps: the part that adds up
This is where spending creeps. The App Store is full of AI apps: description writers, alt text generators, chatbots, SEO tools, review responders. Most charge monthly, many charge by usage credits on top, and a store can easily end up with four of them.
Before adding one, ask:
- Does Shopify already do this? Magic writes descriptions. Sidekick answers data questions. Check before paying for a duplicate.
- Is it a one-time job or an ongoing one? A one-time catalog cleanup might not need a subscription. See writing SEO titles in bulk for a method that uses the assistant you already have.
- How is usage priced? A low monthly fee with per-item credits can cost more than a flat plan once you run it across a whole catalog.
- What happens when you cancel? Content the app wrote into your products stays. Anything it renders on the fly disappears.
The costs that aren't on a price list
Your time checking the work. AI is fast and sometimes wrong. Every discount code, bulk edit, and generated description needs a look. Shopify's documentation is explicit that actions an AI tool takes for you aren't reviewed by Shopify and that incorrect changes are your responsibility. Budget the review time. It's small, and skipping it is how the expensive mistakes happen.
Mistakes. A discount at 50% that was meant to be 15%. A code with no end date. A price change applied to the wrong collection. None of these are AI-specific, but AI makes them faster to commit. We cover the common one in why AI created the wrong discount.
Your customers' data. Connecting an outside assistant means sharing store data with that provider under its terms. That isn't a fee, but it's a cost: a privacy policy to check, a staff account to scope. See is it safe to connect AI to your Shopify store?
Subscription sprawl. Three AI apps at modest monthly prices is a real line on your costs by the end of the year. Review them the way you'd review any recurring spend.
What I'd do at each budget
Spending nothing extra. Use Sidekick for questions and tasks, Magic for writing and images, and one or two Flow automations drafted by Sidekick. That covers a lot of ground and is where everyone should start.
Already paying for Claude or ChatGPT. Connect it, read-only at first. You've added planning sessions, work with your own documents, and store data in the assistant you already use, for no more money.
Willing to pay for a specific outcome. Buy an app only for a job the free tools don't do and you need done continuously. Judge it on the result, not the feature list.
What it costs to be invisible
There's one AI cost that never appears on a bill. When a shopper asks an AI assistant for a product like yours and it recommends another store, you've lost a sale you'll never see in a report.
Checking where you stand is free. The free AI readiness checker shows what AI assistants can read from your storefront in about a minute.
